The easy answer is that it's tradition.

The longer answer is that a turkey is a big bird. We in America must have everything big--big cars, big trucks, big electronics, big people, etc. We are a people of extremes, and eating turkey until you bust is an extreme tradition.

That's all in addition to the fact that turkey tastes wonderful.

Such a variety of foods that normally are only cooked on this special day. We all say that we will control ourselves but once viewing the table and smelling the food.......unresitable. Plus, have you ever been over someones house for Thanksgiving, and you are not allowed to eat (snacks-appetizer)until the main meal is served, sometimes, by that time you are so hungry you could eat a cow and we literately do.

Turkey is as much a part of Thanksgiving tradition as Santa Claus is associated with Christmas.

It is as given a tradition to eat Turkey on Thanksgiving Day,

as it is to drink Marquita's and eat Mexican on Cinca De Mayo,

or drink green beer on St. Patrick's Day

or to shoot fireworks on the Fourth of July,

or to give your sweetheart a gift on Valentine's Day,

or to dress up and give out candy at Halloween.

You've got the idea, huh?

Because it is so darn good. Some families will also eat it for Christmas dinner, again for the same reason.
